Date: 2018-08-05 10:09 pm (UTC)On the one hand, if this is blue sky basic research that might not work, then DARPA is totally the sort of institute to experiment on this, although the article seems to suggest that the technologies are pretty certain and nothing should go wrong.
On the other hand, if the problem isn't so much the technology as the cost of building a new fab (as the $1.5 billion figure suggests), why haven't any of the existing chip manufacturers tried something like this?

Date: 2018-08-06 11:43 am (UTC)I think it takes nation-states down either a route of more democracy, more egality, more social cohesion or it takes them down a route of spending a lot of time and money and effort on repression.
I believe that more democratic, egalitarian and socially cohesive states have a long term economic advantage but are often vulnerable to disruption from more focused represive states.
