OFFS!

Are people still putting that 'blood sacrifice'stuff about? That's real: 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' territory.

Hugh of Lincoln or William of Norwich anyone? Early middle ages in both cases!

Good riddance for sure!

The DARPA article infuriates me, because it reads like a press release and makes no explanation to explain why (1) DARPA and (2) $1.5 billion.

On the one hand, if this is blue sky basic research that might not work, then DARPA is totally the sort of institute to experiment on this, although the article seems to suggest that the technologies are pretty certain and nothing should go wrong.

On the other hand, if the problem isn't so much the technology as the cost of building a new fab (as the $1.5 billion figure suggests), why haven't any of the existing chip manufacturers tried something like this?

DARPA, I think, have a pretty good track record of funding intersting and useful stuff, but also early stage, low Technology Readiness Level research. And a pretty good track record of their funding turning in to new products eventually.

Faster cheaper computers would be good in all sorts of ways.

I am mulling over the impact of cheap and easy killer drones on democracy and governance. If it's easy to kill the president how does the president avoid being assassinated?

I think it takes nation-states down either a route of more democracy, more egality, more social cohesion or it takes them down a route of spending a lot of time and money and effort on repression.

I believe that more democratic, egalitarian and socially cohesive states have a long term economic advantage but are often vulnerable to disruption from more focused represive states.
