Least surprising headline of the week:

"The UK's Brexit trade proposals are not even slightly acceptable to the EU"

I don't think this is quite fair. I think what she's been trying to do is put together something that can be used as the basis for negotiation, in the understanding that it won't be acceptable. I think that if the party had united behind it, that would have worked. That was never going to happen, and that's why Barnier's laying into it publicly now rather than privately during negotiation. But I don't think she herself thinks that the proposals were likely to be accepted.

Raab has been put in the job on the basis that he will be loyal to May and I think he will. I’d ignore the posturing with him.

I think there are politicians where I would see a close connection between their espoused and actual positions (Johnson, Davis) and politicians where I’d see a notable difference between the two (May, Hunt). At this point I’d put Raab in the latter camp.

I now think I was wrong about this. My best guess was that Chequers was intended to be something to use as a starting point for negotiation, but the events of the last week make it seem that it was, for her, a literal solution.

There is a loophole in the EU Convention on Human Rights that disturbs me - vagrancy. If you are homeless (even if it entirely because the state took away your home), the state can lock you away indefinitely without recourse.

I would hope it would never be abused, of course.
