*headache* If they can do that, I would feel a lot more confident: status quo bias would be working for us instead of against us.

But I don't know how plausible it is: even if they can get something passed over the protests of the people who want to use no-deal brexit as leverage and the people who actually want no-deal brexit, you can't just pass it, withdrawing article 50 or equivalent needs to be agreed with the eu. Which I *hope* they'd agree to, but isn't guaranteed, and is less likely if that translates to endlessly dragging out the british situation instead of undoing it.

"Repeatedly watching a video of themselves touching a filthy bedpan reduced people’s OCD symptoms"

Also, having mobile phones must make this sort of thing SO much more convenient. Obviously you could do this with a day planner and some photos, but having an app makes it a lot easier to do. It's the sort of thing where technological progress makes lots of things better in small ways that aren't always obvious beforehand.

The Yugoslavia thing is chilling. It's not the first time I've wondered how close are we to something like that happening here.

it's something to be mindful of but I don't think we have the right mix of ethnic groupings and the right fractal mixture and the right history of genuine animosity. The break up of Yugoslavia and the nationalist and ethnic violence that followed had some foundation in the very real ethnic violence carried out during World War 2 under the aegis of the German occupation.

Other than the Troubles of the 1960's-1990's I don't think we've seen sectarian violence in the current UK since 1745.

Race riots in 56 and later, Rangers v Celtic, ongoing appalling prejudice against Romany and Traveller people, widespread violence against (including murder of) immigrants, knife murder of an MP... I think there’s plenty of roots there for mass violence. It’s luck and hard work, not any mystic national character stuff, that has saved us from it so far.

Oh we're not entirely immune from a pogrom. I just think a civil war is very unlikely. I don't think there are two or three roughly equally sized potential sides on the mainland ready to be provoked in to violence over a period of a decade or two.

I don't quite understand how the legislation can be amended to avoid the UK leaving the EU with no deal unless we actively vote for it. As far as the EU are concerned we have already actively voted for it by invoking Article 50. We leave on the 29th March, with a deal, if the EU has agreed one, without a deal if the EU has not agreed one.

So, unless the amendments make it clear that the UK will revoke Article 50 (and this assumes that a unilateral revokation of Article 50 is permitted) then our promise not to leave without a deal is toothless.

Am I missing something?

So it's perfectly safe to collapse the government and usher in a Corbyn government, we can still re-vist Brexit in February?
