I wonder what the evolutionary advantage of having turtles become mostly female when it's hot is.

Does anyone know?

So options include

1) It used to do something but now it doesn't do anything

2) temperature is linked to a good season to be born male or female

3) temperature is linked to situations where being born either male or female means you are bigger

Fascinating.

I doubt recruiting soldiers from prison is going to work well. People in prison are already pretty bad at things like discipline.

given a good chunk of their military is conscripts traumatised by their training, long before hitting a battlefield, i'm not sure using prisoners will make it worse.

Of course, the fact that soldiers who were recruited from Russian prisoners may be more likely to commit crimes against Ukrainian citizens may well be a feature, not a bug, as far as Russia is concerned...

I'm honestly not sure that they are more likely to commit crimes against Ukrainian citizens. I think they are probably more likely to get themselves killed or desert.

But certainly Ukrainian citizens would be worried about it.

1. "I commonly now see people arguing that pointing out racist attitudes is itself racist." Well, that's so. I've discovered the hard way that being called anti-semitic is considered worse than actually being anti-semitic.
But I can't endorse the idea that any "us-them" thinking is racist, because it looks very different when you're on the other side of the "us-them" divide. More and more in the US I'm getting the sense of being just tolerated in a Christian country, and "us-them" thinking in response is just a matter of protective defense.

3. Where we live, you have the option of plugging your phone into broadband instead of the old phone network. And I'm so glad we decided against doing that, because our broadband service is not reliable - we've been trying to get it fixed for 15 years now - whereas the old phone line never goes out.

6. "If moderators Anderson Cooper and Martha Raddatz had declared that Trump had been disqualified, and that Clinton was therefore president-elect, everyone would have concluded that Cooper and Raddatz had lost their minds." No, we would have been greatly relieved.

3. My parents, for example, neither HAVE, want or need a broadband router. (Nor a MiFi). Their only internet is mobile on my dad's tablet, used a few times a week.

7. Yeah. Lessons not learned. Gah.

9. FFS! Horrific.
