That is a peculiar study about vegetarians breaking their hips. They compared "people who eat meat 5 times a week" and "people who never eat meat." OVER 20 YEARS. I know people who have not eaten any meat in decades because they feel strongly about being vegetarian. I know people who eat meat occasionally (whether it's on Friday nights, or on Thanksgiving) because they think it's bad for their bodies or budgets or for the planet to have too much. And I know people who will eat meat frequently for a while, then read an article in January about meat being unhealthy, and stop eating it until they want to cook burgers outside in May. I don't know many people who have eaten meat 5 times a week for the last 20 years. You'd have to feel strongly about eating meat. You'd have to be fairly rich. You'd have to be consistently unmoved by media reports and medical advice about it being healthy to eat less meat.

As a starting point, it's good to first show whether or not there's a measurable and statistically valid correlation between hip fractures and diet. If there was no noticeable difference between people with two extremes of diet, then you'd conclude that meat consumption doesn't have a noticeable impact on hip fractures.

Now others have data to do more focused analysis on how much meat makes an impact, and what nutrients from the meat are making the impact.

Five meat-including meals a week isn't very much, though---it's not eating meat at every meal, five days a week. It isn't necessarily a roast, either, it sounds like one can cover it by buying a packet of deli lunch meat, say, and having a turkey sandwich for lunch every workday that week. Leaving every other consideration aside, five servings of meat per week sounds like a mainstream figure in the US and Western Europe generally and in line with flexitarian goals.

Although this is as associational study, I would like to see a followup review separating out vegans, and also a different followup covering supplement use. Reducing meat consumption overall is important, but supplements might be necessary from a public health standpoint.
