7. I had, but then I'm a historian.

The Scot always insisted she was Elizabeth I.

I was talking to my father yesterday, who grew up in Glasgow, and he was reminicing about going out with his pals and filling in the gap between the two Is to correct them numbering.

The next interesting one will be William.

Although so many Scots forget William the Lion and he never seems to get the number I he should do, England has had four Williams (the bastard, Rufus, of Orange and Sailor Billy) While Scotland has three (the Lion, of Orange and Sailor Billy) so he'll be IV & V and people will need to add that I! :o)

For the context of this comment I Am A Lawyer.

Scots are going to have to choose which national institution we prefer to prioritise in our national mythos. Either we are more excited about regnal numbers and the institution of the monarchy or we are more excited about Scots Law, the Scottish legal system and the Scottish courts. Either the late Queen is Elizabeth II & I and the future king William V and IV or we respect our own legal system which decided in the 1950's in MacCormack vs Lord Advocate that regnal numbers and names were a matter of royal prerogative and the Queen could call herself whatever she wanted.

I don't think we can both complain about regnal numbers and claim that our legal system is sacrosanct.

True enough.

I'm a republican as you know and if an independent Scotland decides to become a republic, the issue ceases to matter and personally speaking, I'd much rather see that outcome.

And given my own background and having a transphobe in charge of HMG, being married to a Scot, having Scottish ancestry myself and a Scottish marriage certificate might also start to look rather important legally!

I'm married to a Scot so as a historian (and one with a qualification in Modern Scottish History from Dundee among others) I need to be very aware of such things! :o)
