Sister city from a couple of years ago? Impressive search, and if I remember rightly, they found three cities using existing data. Best quip on BS, somebody was going to check their sofa cushions for lost Mayan cities...

As I thought the article pointed out, they tweaked (to use archeological technical terms) the LIDAR data to display what was under the growth -- the original data was collected for other reasons (mapping?). I believe the Edinburgh reference is technically called clickbait to appeal to a UK audience as a representative large regional city but not mammoth like London. You have to pick a well known city, and Edinburgh beats most in large regional cities that many people have a general understanding of, even it's a couple of square miles off.
